We sat down with Peter Trippi, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. Peter directed New York’s Dahesh Museum of Art, which specialized in 19th-century European academic painting and sculpture; before that, he held senior posts at the Brooklyn Museum and Baltimore Museum of Art.

In 2002, Phaidon Press published Trippi’s monograph J W Waterhouse, which reassesses the Victorian painter best known for his Lady of Shalott at Tate Britain. Trippi went on to co-curate the Waterhouse retrospective that appeared 2008-2010 in the Netherlands, England, and Canada.  In 2016, Trippi co-curated the exhibition Lawrence Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity, which is visiting three European museums through 2017: the Fries Museum (Leeuwarden, Netherlands), Belvedere (Vienna, Austria), and Leighton House Museum (London).  Trippi co-edited and contributed to the 250-page book that accompanies the project.

Peter will host the up coming Figurative Art Convention and Expo, November 8-11 in Miami, Florida which will pull together some of the best figurative artists in the world.

Episode 34: Anthony Mangieri

Like painting, making pizza explores the infinite possibilities of arrangement between a limited number of ingredients. Working in the traditional Neapolitan form, Anthony Mangieri has been chasing (and according to numerous critics, achieving) perfection for decades. He opened Una Pizza Napolitana in NYC to rave reviews and full bookings, later relocating to San Francisco and embracing a healthier personal lifestyle with ready access to the outdoors. We have been fans forever and were honored to record a conversation with someone who sits so squarely at the top of his field, consistently bringing passion and energy to his work. Our friend Michael Evans joins us as well. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!

He is a huge talent and if you are unfamiliar with his paintings do yourself a favor and take a look at his work on his website. We hope that you enjoy this one as much as we did!

Daniel Sprick is widely considered one of the leading realist painters. His work is featured in numerous private and public collections including the Denver Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, and the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock. His work has inspired countless artists including the Suggested Donation Duo. That’s right, the boys were honored to sit down with Daniel during his recent New York City show. Gerald Peters Gallery hosted us for this one in a plush private viewing room. You may hear signs of the flutter of activity at the gallery from time to time. You can see some of the work we discuss on the Gerald Peters Website: http://www.gpgallery.com/exhibitions/daniel-sprick-recent-works

Episode 31: Burton Silverman

We hope this one is worth the wait: We recorded with a legend in New York City Realism, Burt Silverman.  Burt has had a long career spanning over six decades. His list of shows and honors is far too extensive to state here, but some highlights are the inclusion of his work in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the New Britain Museum, to name just a few. Burt is known for his figurative paintings, portraits and illustration for publications such as the New Yorker. He is also known as a generous teacher, a beacon for generations of young artists. Burt’s name has been at the top of our list since the inception of Suggested Donation Podcast, so we are honored to finally have the chance to present this conversation to you. We are grateful for all of your positive comments and your patience during our recent podcast drought. We recently switched to a different software and hope that the sound is still of high quality - please let us know your thoughts. Enjoy!

We recorded with local hero, Jay Braun, at the Grand Central Atelier in Queens, NY, where Scott, Tony and Edward all teach painting. Scott recently left his long run as one of the favorite core instructors to pursue his burgeoning online mentoring and instructional videos. We discuss this transition, his roots in film and, of course, his epic paintings. We hope you enjoy this conversation with one of our favorite artists! Definitely check out Scott's informative and engaging videos at his website:

It’s been a while, but we are back with another riveting installment of Suggested Donation Podcast!
We sat down with an artist who is widely considered to be one of the greatest living landscape painters, Joseph McGurl. Joseph’s paintings fuse vivid detail with a textured surface creating paintings that possess real presence. His works are painted using only his plein-air sketches, scientific knowledge and large doses of imagination. We discuss his philosophy on art, technique, tools and his love of science. We are grateful to Joseph McGurl for generously sharing his ideas with us. Thanks always to the Salmagundi Club for hosting us, and to Jay Braun for his many talents. Enjoy the show!

Juliette Aristides is a monumental figure in the classical art community. Her three books on painting have been hugely influential to a generation of artists, with a new, fourth book in the works. Together they create a context for the pictures of some of the most revered contemporary classical realist painters by placing their works next to a lineage of old master and 19th Century paintings. Juliette continues to inspire scores with her own painting and drawing, teaching, and lectures. She is also an old friend and we were happy to finally catch her on a trip to NYC to record a conversation at the Salmagundi Club. Thanks so much for a great discussion Juliette. And, thanks always to Jay Braun!
